Tamil Nadu submits minimum wage proposals
An Indian committee created to fix a basic minimum wage for domestic workers in the area has recommended that 30 rupees (40p) is given to employees for every hour of work they do.
The draft proposal, under consideration by the Minimum Wages Formation Committee in Tamil Nadu, also pushed the concept of a dearness allowance to take account of the rising cost of living, adding to the employee benefits offered, the Times of India revealed.
Consisting of representatives from trade unions, the labour department, employers and domestic workers, the organisation submitted various proposals in November 2009 after a consultation process with the state.
Jeanne Devos, founder of the National Domestic Workers' Movement, told the publication: "The scene is progressing for the better with at least half a dozen states in the process of fixing minimum wages.
"Though the amounts proposed are low, we can always ask for more once domestic workers come under the legal minimum wage ambit."
This week, Chinese government officials in Shanghai announced that the minimum wage tariff is to go up by 15 per cent in a bid to improve the quality of life in the city.
