Chinese minimum wage 'among the lowest in the world'

The minimum wage found in China is lower than that seen in a further 32 African countries, according to a new survey being circulated by the Epoch Times.

According to World Wage Research (WWR) and its "widely-viewed" report that has been circulated on major websites and blogs across China, the employee benefits and wages are nearly the lowest in the world.

Liu Zhirong, an independent Chinese scholar and author of the WWR report, held an interview with Radio Free Asia and said: "China's average annual wage is less than 15 per cent of the world average, ranking 158th in the world."

He looked into the lowest average annual incomes of the 183 countries and regions across the world, concluding that it stands at around $6,078 (£4,067), while China is only $896 (£600).

Mr Liu continued: "If the information were based on the feelings of the common [Chinese] people, I'm afraid the result of this analysis would be even worse."

The Asia Sentinel recently stated that to deflect demands for its currency to be separated from the dollar, China is currently putting a major public focus on wage rises to spur domestic demand and cut trade surpluses.
