Security officers in Malaysia to get minimum wage

The government is to announce that there will be a new national minimum wage for security officers by end of March, with national news agency Bernama reporting the recent promise made by human resources minister Dr S Subramaniam.

Malaysia's employee expert asserted that the move will allow security officers to earn reasonable salaries and allow many of them overcome poverty.

Dr Subramaniam said: "We have not made any decision on the minimum wage for Malaysian workers on the whole, although we are looking at it by sectors. However, we will be announcing the minimum wage for safety sectors which comprise security officers, by March end."

He added that the study on minimum wage for those in the hospitality, electronics and textiles sectors is still ongoing and an announcement will be made in the near to distant future.

Last week, the Malaysian Airlines System Employees' Union said that the practice of letting open market forces decide wages in Malaysia is not practical.
