China to fund employment boost in 2010

The Chinese government has announced that it is to set aside 43.3 billion yuan (£4.231 billion) to boost employment in 2010.

Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier, said it will create nine million new jobs in selected urban areas and keep unemployment below the 4.6 per cent limit.

Additionally, he announced a one-year extension of a programme to exempt company bosses from making social security contributions on behalf of their workers, in plans that are hoped will aid millions of graduates and migrant workers.

Chen Shengwang, a migrant worker in Beijing, said of the government's idea: "I am interested in issues such as the employment of migrant workers like me. I have had some difficulty in finding jobs since I came to Beijing. I have a family to feed back in the countryside. I can't be jobless."

This month, Wen Jiabao told China Daily that the pensions of enterprise retirees across China are to rise by a further ten per cent.
