Employee reward and benefits news

Malaysian plantation workers to get better working rights?

Construction, plantations, manufacturing and services sectors could be lined up for a boost following plans to install a better wage for workers in the industries.

Irene Fernandez, executive director of Tenaganita, said: "Malaysia does not have a comprehensive policy on migrant labour. There is a lack of equal treatment for workers in the country, these are the deep rooted causes a major factor is decent living wage."

She explained that government officials believe that curbing foreign labour intake will allow workers better rights in these areas, which is deserved as the nation is still "heavily reliant" on manufacturing and agriculture.

Ms Fernandez added that the government is starting to get uncomfortable with foreign workers as they are building their own networks and partnering up with locals to set up businesses.

Earlier this week, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines announced that it is aiming to secure a £1-a-day employee benefits hike across the board for workers in Metro Manila, highlighting how it is justified given recent improvements in the economy.
