Employee benefits: Agreement 'must not make improvements more difficult'

The existing Trans Pacific Partnership Trade Agreement could block changes that could boost employee benefits and pay, a leading organisation has warned.

Helen Kelly, president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (NZCTU), has called for action to create a new and fairer framework for trade agreements.

She said: "There is a high risk that this agreement will make it more difficult for future governments to make the changes that are needed to improve the lives of working people."

Ms Kelly suggested that some of the suggested directives would result in medicine prices rising and public services coming under threat.

She called for action that puts jobs and the protection of working rights such as employee benefits and pay first.

In other news, the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship has backed an initiative by the Fair Work Ombudsman aiming to provide more information to recruiters about providing equal employee benefits to workers from overseas.ADNFCR-3022-ID-19675070-ADNFCR
