Guangdong announces minimum wage rise

The government in China's Guangdong province has announced plans to raise its minimum wage by nearly 20 per cent in a bid to boost working conditions as well as health and wellbeing, while also and attracting labour back to the country's biggest exporter.

According to Guangdong's Department of Human Resources and Social Security, capital of the province Guangzhou is to aim for an increase of its minimum wage of 19.8 per cent, while the rest of the province could rise to just above 21 per cent.

This will mean that from May 1st, the province's average minimum wage will be raised from CNY 860 to CNY 1,030 (£82.86 to £99.24).

Many workers were laid off during the global financial crisis and many decided to return to rural communities, put off by the prospect of low-wage employment enough to go back.

It follows news of several areas in the country aiming for higher wages, after it was discovered that minimum wage in the nation was one of the lowest on a global scale.
