Jaipur failure to budge on minimum wage forces opposition walkout
The Indian Jaipur government's refusal to improve employee reward and pay for labourers has prompted a walk-out by the opposition party.
Prompted by a speech by CPI member Pema Ram, the opposition members walked out after the speaker refused to give Mr Ram's proposals any time for discussion, reports the Times of India.
According to the newspaper, Mr Ram asked how the government could justify improved employee rewards for government workers but not for poorer Indians.
He said: "Who will care for the common people reeling under price rise and bearing the brunt of the vagaries of nature such as drought?"
The minimum wages for labourers in the state of Jaipur is Rs 100 (£1.47) per hour, which he is hopeful could be raised to Rs 250.
Earlier this month, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee was criticised for not changing the tax structure for those on low earnings, while maintaining tax breaks for those earning more, reports Daily News & Analysis.
