Liberal Party of Australia will 'remove employee benefits'
Leader of the Liberal Party Tony Abbott has confirmed that he would cut levels of protection from unfair dismissal for working Australians if he was to win power this year, according to a leading union group.
The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) argued that the Liberals will reintroduce one of the key elements of the ill-fated WorkChoices by bringing back a lack of protection from unfair dismissal.
ACTU secretary Jeff Lawrence believes it will be an epic step back for employee benefits in the nation should things go back to how they were over a year ago.
He said: "Under WorkChoices, employers had the freedom to sack workers on a whim. Young people, women and other vulnerable workers were sacked unfairly. Now, they are at risk again."
"It may appeal to some employers to take away unfair dismissal, but it will be bad news for workers' job security."
Earlier this month, Australian unions restated their support for a humanitarian immigration and refugee policy and demanded strong leadership from all sides of politics to show compassion to those fleeing strife-torn parts of the world.
