Asia leads growth in world tourism

Workers in the leisure and holiday sector in Asia could see their employee benefits strategy improving as recent statistics show a rise in international tourism levels.

The recovery in world tourism is being led by Asia, it has been claimed by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

In the first half of 2010, the increase in international travelling was buoyed by the emerging economies of Asia, which exhibited a growth rate of eight per cent.

The rebound was led by Sri Lanka, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Singapore and other Asian nations.

In comparison, tourism levels in developed nations only grew at a rate of six per cent in the same time period.

UNWTO secretary-general, Taleb Rifai, advised caution amid the recovery of the tourism industry. He said: "In many advanced economies, namely in the USA and in some major European markets, economic recovery has still to consolidate."
