Indian IT firms introduce bereavement leave

Workers in Indian IT firms may soon be able to take leave in order to mourn the death of an immediate family member.

Flexible benefits such as bereavement leave are set to become a common practice in firms across the nation, with IT companies leading the way.

The move which is in line with most global company policies varies in the number of days afforded to employees to grieve their loss.

A spokesperson for Tata Consultancy Services explained that the decision of leaves was made on an individual basis. Absences usually vary according to the needs of the mourning employee and could stretch between one to five days or more in certain cases.

These policies are especially relevant in India where last rites for family members take up several days to complete.

Recently, India has been at the forefront of introducing several employee-friendly regulations. One of these allowed staff to watch this year's Fifa World Cup championship while at work.
