Strong leadership boosts employee engagement

Strong leadership is the most important influence upon employee engagement, according to a recent survey.

Research by Towers Watson has revealed that employers will engage with an organisation and stay in the company if they have confidence in the leadership, HrmAsia reported.

What's more, companies with higher engagement levels have an increased net profit margin of more than two per cent, as issues with absenteeism and retention improve.

Consequently, companies should see leadership development as an investment rather than a stress on human resources, Amrita Prasad explained, senior consultant for organisational surveys and insights at Towers Watson.

The survey flew in the face of established thinking that pay is the key driver for staff retention and productivity.

Second to leadership, career development was cited as an important factor in improving levels of engagement.

Employee benefits and flexible working options will also improve employee engagement and attract workers who would otherwise be unable to enter the workforce.
