Employee reward and benefits news

Is working longer good for mental health?

Working into old age may in fact be beneficial for mental health, according to one industry expert.

Dr Lynda Shaw, cognitive neuroscientist and business improvement strategist, claims that instead of putting the body under more stress, working to an older age is actually a positive thing.

"Depression is enormously on the increase and so is stress and anxiety," she said. "It comes a lot from loneliness, isolation and lack of self-worth."

When people stop working they often find themselves feeling depressed and useless - feelings that working till later on in life can abate.

What's more, staying in the workforce means that a person continues to be cognitively challenged and socially stimulated, which can help to stave off dementia.

As Asia's population keeps on ageing, these assertions will be welcomed by employers and employees alike.

However, it is important that businesses embrace their older workers and use their skills and expertise to optimum effect.
